CURRENT PROJECTS
Dr. Berkley is currently writing a book on reproductive disorders and Chinese medicine, and hosts his groundbreaking seminars, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Reproductive Medicine in the Diagnosis & Treatment of Infertility, across the country. With the increase in the number of couples being diagnosed as “infertile,” Dr. Berkley feels that it is even more important now to share his expertise and findings with acupuncturists, herbalists, gynecologists, and other healthcare professionals.
Dr. Berkley’s Personal Story
I developed an interest in acupuncture and herbal medicine due to a very personal and difficult reason. Infertility.
My wife and I decided that we wanted to start a family a soon after we got married. We tried and tried for 2 years and then sought the help of a reproductive endocrinologist here in New York City. My wife was diagnosed as having a bacterial infection and an autoimmune marker. We were both given doxycycline and she was given a short course of prednisone. At our follow-up examinations we were 'cleared' of all obstacles to conception and told to go home and 'try'. Try and try we did for another 6 months without success.
At this point my wife sought out the help of an acupuncturist/herbalist who had some basic knowledge of reproductive issues. We were lucky to find one.
After treating with acupuncture and herbal medicine for six months my wife got nothing more than a regulated period. We were disappointed. Then, the very next month, the miracle manifested: she was pregnant and, she carried to term without a hitch! We had a beautiful 7.5 pound little tiger who is now a big boy. I was amazed, humbled and enormously excited and gratified by the result which was yielded by what seemed like some hocus-pocus newfangled type of medicine, but it really worked (my son can attest to this!).
It was then that I started to explore acupuncture and herbal medicine on my own. I had this urgent curiosity to learn more. I couldn't believe it when I found out that this type of medicine had existed for 3,000 years and that there are literally hundreds of medical 'Classics' dating back centuries on the subject of reproductive disorders and how to treat them. Incredible!
Then, this really strange thing happens: I'm reading the Village Voice and I spot an advertisement from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego. The ad reads something like this: "PACIFIC COLLEGE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF OUR NEW YORK CAMPUS. ALL ARE INVITED TO AN OPEN HOUSE." And, to the Open House I went. I left almost six years later with a degree in acupuncture and a National Board Certification in herbal medicine.
With license(s) in hand, I devoted every free moment to studying Western medical and Chinese medical approaches to treating infertility. After years of study and clinical experience, I have been fortunate in that I have been able to develop my own unique acupuncture protocols and proprietary herbal formulas. I am still amazed and in awe at how these treatments work miracles. Just ask all of our new mommies and daddies!

Tibha is The Berkley Center’s Director of Nutrition Services. She says ““I get excited when each new piece of nutrition research shares my belief, on how small interactions between nutrients and the tiny imbalances make the difference to overall long-term health as well as our daily energy levels. It is like an orchestra, just a few musical notes out of tune affects the whole score.
Tibha’s philosophy is that it is not a “bucket” of nutrients that best serves an individual, but rather the proper utilization of nutrition that is clinically important to our health and well-being.
As a Registered Dietitian in the U.S. and the U.K., Tibha has had extensive experience in the field of dietary and nutritional counseling on both a national and international basis.
She graduated in Applied Nutrition and Dietetics from Aberdeen, Scotland in 1983. Tibha trained for her RD in Oxford, England, she is also is a Registered Public Health Nutritionist in the U.K and holds a Masters Degree in Health Behavior and Exercise.
She says “my vast experience has taught me that integrating conventional & complementary nutrition into practice works best. This approach provides the optimal benefits felt in the quality of life.”
Tibha was a Research and Clinical Dietitian at the Radcliffe Hospitals in Oxford, England. where she participated in a study on the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids and retinopathy in diabetes. Her clinical practice with inpatients and outpatients in the areas of endocrinology, pediatrics, gastroenterology, oncology, neurology, and cardiology gives her a firm grasp of effective practice.
During her Masters, her thesis concluded that the nutritional information disseminated in both print and televised media generally encourage poor nutrition habits.

In Riyadh, she established primary care clinics including nutrition services for pregnant women, post-natal care for new mothers, and taught nutrition to ante-natal care staff. In London, Tibha lectured to graduate students and conducted workshops for nurses, pharmacists, and physicians on new nutritional knowledge.
Tibha has written educational materials, articles, training manuals, and abstracts on the implications of proper nutrition on health and well-being. She has provided consultancy services in creating nutritional training workshops.

The role of a healer is to be the guide and the facilitator. As a graduate of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine Klara has studied massage in both Eastern and Western aspects of thought and modalities. Since earning her massage therapy license, Klara has broadened her scope of practice to include Shiatsu, Reflexology, Thai, Deep Tissue, and Pre and Post Natal Massage.
Massage is a great way to prepare and assist the body for the process of pregnancy and labor, making it a smoother and more pleasing experience by helping to keep the muscles relaxed and allowing the flow of energy to guide childbirth. Klara works with mothers-to-be in preparing for the experience with prenatal massage. Swedish Massage: A vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. All strokes flow toward the heart and are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The many benefits of Swedish massage may include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions (including those of the pelvis!), improved circulation and blood flow all of which are beneficial to the uterine/ovarian environment.
Amma Therapy: Amma is the traditional Japanese word for massage, and this type of massage works very well when used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments. This form of bodywork is based upon the principles of Chinese medicine and is more than five thousand years old. The Amma techniques encompass a series of pressing, stroking, stretching, percussive manipulations on acupressure points along the body’s fourteen major meridians. Amma therapy works very successfully in treating a wide range of medical conditions which Dr. Berkley and I will discuss thoroughly so that I may design a customized Amma treatment to specifically meet your needs.
Reflexology is based upon an ancient Chinese therapy which involves manipulation of specific reflex areas in the foot, hands, and ears that correspond to other parts of the body. This method involves the application of pressure to these areas in order to stimulate body’s organs and to relieve areas of congestion. Similar to acupressure principles, reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain a balance amongst physiological functions. This technique is used to facilitate relaxation and stimulate the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. It is especially useful in stress-related disorders.
Myofascial Release: This type of massage is the three-dimensional application of sustained pressure and movement into the fascial system in order to eliminate fascial restrictions and facilitate the emergence of emotional patterns and belief systems that are no longer relevant or are impeding progress. First, an assessment is made by visually analyzing the human frame, followed by the palpation of the tissue texture of various fascial layers. Upon locating an area of fascial tension, gentle pressure is applied in the direction of the restriction. Myofascial release is an effective therapeutic approach in the relief of constrictions and adhesions that may be contributory factors in infertility.
Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Therapy may also be used and generally integrated into other massage techniques. We can discuss these options if they are deemed appropriate after your Intake Evaluation.

INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR BLOOD & URINE LAB TESTS
Each micronutrient plays an indispensable role in promoting optimal cell function. When some cells do not function at their best, the foundation of our health is compromised.
Identifying and correcting nutritional deficiencies is an important step in the improvement and maintenance of fertile health.
Factors beyond diet determine whether nutrient function is adequate. These include biochemical individuality, genetic predisposition, absorption and metabolism, age, disease conditions and medications taken.
Blood Tests
We use a cutting-edge blood test which measures specific vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential micronutrients within your lymphocytes (white blood cells).
Your lymphocytes provide a picture of nutrient levels in their 4- to 6-month lifespan. Thus they provide a history rather than a snapshot of nutrient intake.
The special tests we use assess long-term intracellular requirements using each individual’s lymphocytes. This determines functional intracellular deficiencies, which might not be detected by standard serum tests.
You can have micronutrient imbalance and not be aware of it. Even people with healthy eating habits can have deficiencies. Biochemical individuality, absorption, chronic conditions, age, and lifestyle all influence individual micronutrient requirements.
Urine Tests
These tests measure the by-products of metabolism which serve as “markers” of your cell metabolism and thus nutritional status. I've heard that your practice is dedicated to treating infertility. Why is this?
When I started my practice, like most acupuncturists, I had a general practice. One event changed my life and my practice. I had a patient who was suffering from infertility. She had been trying to conceive for three years, with an FSH of 40. She was forty-two years-old. Her Western medical diagnosis was premature-ovarian-failure. After treating her for three months she burst through my door crying! I didn't know what to think. I was startled and confused until she started laughing and informed me that she was pregnant! Still today, I have a photograph of her little boy, and it is the first baby picture to adorn my wall-of-success. It was alone for a while, but is now kept company by many other photos of Berkley Babies! Come in and tour the gallery!
This event changed her life and mine. It was then that I decided to devote my life to helping couples start or expand their families.
What types of infertility cases does The Berkley Center treat?
Our proprietary acupuncture and herbal medicine protocols combined with nutritional counseling and fertility massage continue to successfully treat infertility due to hormonal imbalances such as elevated FSH as well as luteal phase defect, PCOS, endometriosis, thin lining, low ovarian reserve and poor egg quality. We have also seen excellent results when treating those with thrombophilic disorders and immunological pathologies including but not limited to activated NK cells and antiphospholipid antibodies, Factor V Leiden, and dual gene variant MTHFR with hypehomocysteinemia. We continue to yield impressive results when treating poor motility, poor morphology and low sperm count and sperm DNA fragmentation. By combining acupuncture, herbs, fertility massage, and nutritional counseling we are a seeing greater number of take-home-babies in comparison to undergoing IUI or IVF alone.
There was a study done at Harvard which showed that stress may reduce the function of the hypothalamic- pituitary-ovarian axis, thus contributing to infertility. This pathomechansim can be explained thus: Stress stimulates the sympathetic nervous system to cause vasoconstriction which results in degradation of blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Arterial constriction is seen at the uterine artery and ovarian arteries. If fact, when a transvaginal ultra-sound and a color-doppler examination show that the uterine artery impedance is greater than 3, pregnancy will not be achieved. Beta-endorphins released from the brain in response to acupuncture interrupt the negative activity of the sympathetic nervous system causing dilation of the arteries facilitating increased blood flow to the lining and ovaries. Thus, the lining becomes healthier, enabling a more suitable environment for a successful implantation. Egg quality is greatly improved as well. We have seen many patients with uterine artery impedances greater than 3 be reduced to 2 to 2.5 after treatment.
Who is your typical patient?
We treat female and male patients. Typically, they are between the ages of twenty-five to forty-five. Many want to try a natural approach before considering IVF. Many want to utilize complementary medicine care in conjunction with their IVF protocol. It is my experience that by combining both natural and conventional medical approaches, pregnancy rates are greater than when using one of these modalities alone. Many of our male patients come in after a vericocelectomy to help shorten the recovery time while simultaneously helping to improve sperm quality.
Should my husband be treated?
If your husband has sperm problems he is a good candidate for treatment. Our treatments show impressive results in improving sperm count, morphology, and motility. Sperm DNA fragmentation is often frequently reduced.
How does acupuncture help treat infertility?
Acupuncture and herbal medicine improve blood-flow (hemodynamics) to the reproductive organs, thereby improving egg-quality and lining quality.
Even if your reproductive endocrinologist tells you that you have a beautiful 10 millimeter lining, that does not guarantee that it is perfectly healthy and functional. Endometrial morphology is not analogous to intra-endometrial vascularization. This means that even though you have a ‘thick’ lining, it does not mean that it is a lining which is optimal for implantation. Our treatments often show great improvement in egg quality, sperm quality and lining quality, the three things necessary for a successful pregnancy!
I understand that you use herbal medicine with many of your patients. What do the herbs do? And, are they safe?
Acupuncture increases the flow of blood to the reproductive environment, improving egg-quality and endometrial-lining health. If you have systemic deficiencies contributing to infertility, acupuncture in and of itself may not be enough. Herbal medicine can have a direct impact on your metabolic system, your endocrine system and other systems which may be under functioning and contributing to infertility. Herbal medicine can nourish your internal reproductive landscape and give your body something it lacks; acupuncture can invigorate that which is stagnant and move that which is blocked.
Regarding the safety of our herbs, our supplier, Kamwo Herbs has been serving the traditional Chinese medicine community since 1973. All the herbs they use meet governmental regulations of both the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the United States Food and Drug Administration.
An overwhelming majority of the herbs are grown in the wild and are sulfur-free. Those that are not wild, are grown following the strict guidelines of the PRC. Pesticides such as DDT and Hexachlorophene are not permitted. Sulfite content is within the acceptable level required by the USDA, and these herbs possess the same low level of sulfites as dried fruit and wine. Herbs are tested to ensure that they meet heavy metal standards in both China and the U.S.
How important is diet?
There is plenty of evidence about how nutritional factors affect fertility and pregnancy outcomes. However, because medical doctors are not nutritionists, they are unlikely to suggest dietary changes as a tool for fertility enhancement and miscarriage prevention.
If what you eat affects whether you will contract cancer or whether you are putting yourself at risk for heart disease, then why shouldn’t your diet affect your fertility or your ability to carry a pregnancy to term?
That story of grandpa who smoked 30 cigarettes a day, drank 5 beers and lived to a ripe old age of 95 forgot to mention the “other grandpa” who also smoked 30 cigarettes a day and had 5 beers but passed away at age 65.
Each of us responds differently to the same environment and what we eat and drink.
This is why even small changes in your nutrition and lifestyle could affect fertility and pregnancy results.
What studies are there on nutrition and fertility?
We know an inflammatory diet is likely to affect the endometrial (uterus) health.
Studies show body weight, body fat, PCOS, gestational diabetes, celiac disease affect fertility. The Nurses Health study shows dietary differences in women effect different conception outcomes.
When will I see the benefits of Nutritional Counseling?

Do you take insurance for Nutrition Counseling?
We do not accept insurance, however, if your insurance plan accepts out of network services from a Registered Dietitian, we can provide you an insurance form that you may to submit to your insurance provider for direct reimbursement.
My doctor says that if my FSH levels are elevated even once, this indicates that I have poor egg quality. What is your opinion on this?
At The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness we continue to see improved egg quality as a result of our proprietary protocols. As a result of these improvements, FSH and Estradiol levels often normalize. Patients then either conceive naturally or they are accepted into an IVF clinic to start a cycle.
My acupuncturist gave me a bottle of herbal medicine. They were pills. Are these herbs the right ones for me?
Probably not. Herbal medicine is an art and a science which has been and continues to be developed. The use of herbal medicine spans over a period of more than three thousand years. After all this time, it has been determined that the best way to prescribe herbal medicine is through the development of a custom made formula which is designed exclusively for the particular patient being treated. The bottled stuff is known as a ‘Patent Formula’. It is given to multiple patients regardless of the differences in their presenting pathologies.
When treating complex presentations such as infertility, custom formulas are the only way to go. If a person is taking ‘Patent Medicine’, they are definitely not taking advantage of the power and flexibility that herbal medicine has to offer. Furthermore, we don’t really know what the pills contain and therefore their safety profile is questionable.
If what you say is true, why did my practitioner give me pills instead of a custom formula?
Your practitioner is probably not Board Certified in herbal medicine. We are. If he or she is Board Certified and is still utilizing ‘Patent Formulas’, then they have limited experience in proper diagnosis and formula design. Prescribing custom developed natural herbal remedies the traditional way is an art which takes years of arduous study and practice to master. Remember, just because one is licensed as an acupuncturist does not automatically mean that one possesses knowledge of herbal medicine. Typically, in China, practitioners of herbal medicine are not acupuncturists, and acupuncturists are not herbalists. It takes years to master each discipline, so doing both is that much more difficult. Pills are easy to prescribe but, generally speaking, ineffective and potentially harmful.
I've heard that Vitex and Chasteberry are helpful for women who are trying to conceive. What is your opinion on using these herbs?
Experienced practitioners of Chinese medicine know that giving a patient a single herb is, generally speaking, a complete waste of time. The experienced practitioner will prescribe a formula based very specifically upon the individual’s presentation of signs and symptoms.
We take into consideration even the smallest details about an individual when diagnosing and prescribing. It is only through a meticulous and extensive intake that a proper and effective formula may prescribed.
What are Dr. Berkley’s qualifications? And what are the qualifications of the other practitioners at The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness? How much experience does Dr. Berkley and his staff have in treating infertile patients?
Dr. Berkley has been in practice as a New York State Licensed, a Board Certified Acupuncturist and a Board Certified Herbalist since 1996. He is also licensed to practice acupuncture in Connecticut and is licensed as a Doctor of Acupuncture in the State of Rhode Island. He was the very first Doctor of Acupuncture and herbal medicine to devote his life to understanding and treating reproductive disorders. After years of treating patients with a wide array of fertility disorders, Dr. Berkley has been able to design proprietary acupuncture protocols and herbal formulas which consistently show promising results.
Dr. Berkley is a member of Resolve and the American Infertility Association, and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. He is an Advisory Board Member of The InterNational Council on Infertility Information Dissemination (INCIID). He is also on the Advisory Board of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM). He is also on the Board of Doctors at ATIME. Dr. Berkley sits on the Advisory Board of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine (ABORM). Dr. Berkley is the first acupuncturist to be inducted into the New York State Obstetricians/Gynecology Society.
He lectures frequently to medical doctors, acupuncturists and patients on infertility, acupuncture and herbal medicine. In addition to writing articles on Infertility and Complementary Medicine he has appeared on national radio and television shows such as NY1 News, NBC News and The Regis Philbin Show to spread the word!
He is a graduate of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York City.
What about The Berkley Center’s massage programs?
Fertility Massage is used to help support your body’s natural reproductive processes. Massage also helps soften pelvic adhesions and remove energy blockages. These blockages can contribute to menstrual pain, other physical pains, stress and infertility.

How long will I have to be treated for?
We work with our patients for the entire time that they are trying to conceive. We recommend treatment twice weekly. Once you are pregnant, we will treat you for the first trimester in order to help you maintain your pregnancy. Continued treatment is important as 90% of all failed pregnancies occur within the first trimester. Acupuncture and natural fertility medicine can help reduce this possibility.
If you are a candidate for herbal medicine, you will be prescribed a customized formula which is taken twice daily for three to five months.
Remember, if you are in an IUI, IVF or donor-egg cycle, schedule appointments for your pre and post acupuncture treatments in conjunction with your procedure. This increases your chances of success significantly! (See study: FERTILITY AND STERILITY® VOL. 77, NO. 4, APRIL 20)
I recently learned that a German study was done which showed definitively that having acupuncture treatments pre and post egg transfer greatly enhances the chances of a successful IVF procedure. I would like to come in for acupuncture pre and post transfer but my transfer will be on a Saturday! Do you work weekends?
We are committed to our patients. If your transfer occurs on a Saturday or a Sunday, we will be here for you no matter what time.
How long does it take to get an appointment?
Normally it takes about a week or two to find a mutually convenient time. However, we understand that you may have your own time restraints, having a busy schedule or working with a Reproductive Endocrinologist for an upcoming ART cycle. With our extended hours, we should be able to accommodate you as soon as possible.
